Kallur Lighthouse, Kalsoy — the knife-edge ridge

Difficultyhard
Duration3–4 hours + ferry
Best seasonJune–September
TypeHike

A dramatic ridge walk on the sliver-thin island of Kalsoy to a tiny lighthouse perched on a green promontory — the cinematic viewpoint made famous on screen. Requires a ferry, a drive through single-lane tunnels, and a head for exposure.

Getting here is half the adventure: a ferry from Klaksvík to Kalsoy, then a drive north through narrow single-lane tunnels to the village of Trøllanes. From there a steep, often-muddy path climbs to Kallur Lighthouse on its improbably green headland, with sheer drops on both sides and 360° views over the northern islands. It is genuinely exposed and dangerous in wind or low cloud — go only in good weather, consider a local guide, and turn back if the ridge is slick. On a clear day it’s the most spectacular hour in the Faroes.
