The westernmost island, a summer seabird city. A ferry (or short flight) reaches Mykines, then a guided cliff-top walk passes thousands of nesting puffins to the lighthouse and the gannet colony on Mykineshólmur.
Mykines is a seasonal place — the ferry from Sørvágur runs May to August, and access to the puffin colonies requires a local guide and a small permit to protect the birds. Book the ferry well ahead; it’s small and weather-dependent, and getting stranded overnight is a real possibility (pack accordingly). The reward is one of the Atlantic’s great wildlife walks: puffins at arm’s length along the path, and a gannet colony out on the holm past the lighthouse. Bring layers, sturdy boots, and patience for the fog.
