The Faroes' most famous optical illusion — a large freshwater lake that appears to hang hundreds of metres above the crashing Atlantic. An easy-to-moderate walk along the shoreline leads to the Trælanípa cliff and the Bøsdalafossur waterfall.
The trail begins near the village of Miðvágur and follows the lake’s edge on boggy but obvious ground. Keep going to the Trælanípa cliff, where the illusion snaps into place: from the right angle, the lake looks like it’s floating far above the sea. A little further on, Bøsdalafossur pours straight off the plateau into the ocean. There’s a small landowner fee at the trailhead — pay it, wear waterproof boots, and give the cliff edges a wide, honest margin. In good light this is one of the best short walks in the North Atlantic.
